After suffering heavy defeats against England and Ireland in the matches that had recently concluded, the Indian team returned home to sharp criticism from critics. Gambhir has now responded to those critics while also ensuring that the confidence of the team's captain is not undermined.
Gambhir said there is a need to trust the Indian team and that minor mistakes are part of the game. He said such small mistakes should not lead to a rush to change the composition of the T20 team. According to Gambhir, it is wrong to label an entire team or a player as poor because of one bad innings or a defeat in a particular match.
Citing the example of the World Cup, Gambhir asked which team has won two consecutive World Cups without losing a single match. He said India won its second World Cup not only within 17 years but within 17 months.
Gambhir also responded to critics who have raised questions over Shreyas Iyer's captaincy. He said he had worked with Shreyas during the IPL 2024 season at Kolkata Knight Riders, when Shreyas was the KKR captain and Gambhir was the mentor.
Gambhir said there was one quality he particularly liked about Shreyas during that period: he was willing to give up his place when required for the benefit of his team. He said being selfless is one of the qualities of good leadership and that he saw this quality in Shreyas, which the player can carry forward in his career as a captain. Gambhir praised Shreyas by describing him as selfless.
Meanwhile, India won its first T20 World Cup in 2007 under the leadership of M.S. Dhoni. The team then had to wait 17 years to win its third World Cup. India won the World Cup again in 2024 under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.
India then won the World Cup for the third time in 2026 under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. India needed only two years, rather than 17 years, to win the World Cup for the third time.
The Indian team's next target will now be the 2028 World Cup, where the side will enter with the objective of winning the title for the third consecutive time.
